As a printer I cannot recommend this at all, as it self-cleans every time you turn it on and before every print job (unless jobs come in very quick succession), using up ink in the process.
You can therefore run out of ink without ever printing anything and running costs are absolutely enormous as a result. In one year it has used up 4 complete sets of cartridges and has only printed several hundred sheets. I now leave it on 24/7 to avoid the every day cleaning cycle and will be replacing it shortly.
On the plus side, it has excellent photo print quality, good quality for standard text, absolutely excellent scanning quality, decent enough speed (hobbled by long delays while it self cleans) and wireless connectivity works well.
The supplied scanning software is atrocious, lacking options, seemingly purposefully disallowing higher DPI selections and being achingly slow to process scan data. Third party software like Vuescan is MUCH faster and allows selection of the maximum DPI the scanner hardware is capable of. Even slide scanning works well with quality not far off my old Nikon LS-40.

This is a photo printer that also has a photo quality scanner. Photocopying is very easy and double sided printing is a cinch. The software provided is excellent, and the photo results have to be seen to be believed. My husband won his local club competition with his first photo from this printer. I have never bought a Canon printer before, but with these results I will be staying loyal to the brand.

Colour photographs print at high quality right up to A4 borderless. Colour printing with cyan, magenta, yellow and grey inks give excellent quality.
Availablility of the 521 ink resevoirs is limited on the high street and prices are high. Online availability is now much better.
Duplex printing is slow, partly because the printer allows a drying time. The duplexing and borderless printing arrangements are less flexible than on my previous Canon IP5000.
Single sided plain paper printing is good quality and fast enough for most needs.
I have not needed to use the wireless capability yet, but it looks straightforward. Copying and scanning are also very good.
Overall this is an excellent printer. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

whilst this is a very good printer and reasonably easy to set-up,produces top quality prints,it still suffers from the same problem that many printers experience these days, which is the lack of ink capacity, forever buying new cartridges as with exception of one black cartridge they only hold 9ml of ink.
Even worse than my previous printer which was an mp560,13ml per cartridges.
All in all if you can live with cost of cartridges, then would certainly recommend

Very expensive to run |

Whilst a good quality printer / scanner it is very expensive on ink, as it goes through a head cleaning routine every time it is switched on and before every print run.

Expensive to run, eats ink |

Picture quality is excelent, however at a cost!, it has an anoying feature that everytime you switch the printer on it cleans all 6 ink cartridges thus using even more ink, it is cheeper to have a run of printing rather than do the odd one every now and again, it is important to use the correct paper profile as I found out to my cost, using the wrong paper selection wastes ink and printout as it tends to over use the ink and the picture will not totally dry out causing smudging days after they have been printed. Everything else about the MP980 is fine, the scanner software is excelent, and the scanned images (even the negatives scanned)are very sharp and colours vivid. If you buy this printer, find a paper you are hapy with and stick to it, always have a spare set of ink cartridges in as you WILL need them sooner than you would like.

Poor connection, horrendous ink usage |

Looks good, when working, OK print quality.
However.... Could only connect wirelessly with my desktop (Vista) not my laptop (XP).
Ink usage is horrific, couldn't believe how quickly they emptied.
Got rid of it quickly on EBay for a small loss and got an HP Officejet 8500 which is fantastic. Shame as I've always gone for Canon products but this is not a good machine.

As always Canon have hit the mark with this scanner/printer. Both aspects give excellent results: film or print scans and inkjet prints - why buy separate units?
The extra gray ink in this printer adds to its versatility giving quality B&W inks. You can also print photos using the black pigment, giving punchy and dramatic results!
